Alaska is the United States 49th state and the most populous area north of the 60th parallel line. Most of the state's residents live in the metropolitan area of Anchorage. The state's economy is driven by the oil and gas industry, the fishing industry and a very active tourism industry. This territory was purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million. There are 6 regions in the state, and over 34,000 miles of shoreline bordering the state.The state has a subarctic climate with as much as 75" of snowfall in the Anchorage area alone. Some of the most well known cities in Alaska are; Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Homer, Seward, Wasilla, Ketchikan, and Sitka.
The phenomena called the Aurora Borealis occurs when charged protons and electrons strike the earth's atmosphere. It can be seen for 243 days in the Fairbanks region. Travelers come to Alaska from all over the world to see the Aurora Borealis, Iditarod, and Denali. Wilderness minded tourists who venture on the adventure of a lifetime, are generally interested in seeing wildlife such as whales, moose, elk, wolves, and bears. Alaska is one of the most beautiful states in the United States.
